Walter Roberts

Harold F. Reed
August 1957 to August 1967

Harold served the Foundation as President, and Director (1951-1971) and the Chautauqua Institution as a Trustee (1950-1972) and Honorary Trustee (1972-1982) until the time of his death. Harold received a BA from Princeton and a LLB from the University of Pittsburgh Law School. Mr. Reed practiced law in Beaver, PA for 64 years. He and his wife Mary Lou resided during the summer in the family home on Foster. The Reed family's leadership is continued through the Harold F and Mary Lou Reed Family lectureship fund of the Foundation.

John D. Hamilton
August 1967 to August 1971

As an early leader of the foundation, Hamilton worked to establish it as a separate entity to protect the Institution's assets. John was also vice chair of the board of trustees of the Chautauqua Institution (1964-1982) and a Trustee from 1959 to 1984. Hamilton helped to found the Gebbie Foundation, which he served as President in 1969 as well as the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and Jamestown Community College. John served on the boards of the Carnahan-Jackson Foundation, the Reginald and Elizabeth Lenna Foundation, the James Prendergast Library, YWCA, United Way, and Chamber of Commerce.

Richard H. Miller
August 1971 to August 1996

Dick is the great-grandson of Lewis Miller, co-founder of the Chautauqua Institution. Dick served the Chautauqua Institution as a Trustee (1966-1981) and Chair (1970-1978). Dick practiced law for many years at Foley and Lardner and was instrumental in the founding of the Foundation. He is married to Miriam Sample Reading. Dick attended Yale University (BA, 1954) and Harvard University (LLB, 1957) and served on the board of editors for Harvard Law Review 1955-1957. Dick and Miriam served Chautauqua in an immeasurable way, including virtually every committee and campaign.

William H. Hill
August 1996 to August 2002

Bill is the former President of Alcoa. He is married to Dorothy Sample Hill, and they have 3 children. Bill attended Cornell University (BS, 1956). Bill also served the Foundation as a Director (1991-2005) and a campaign volunteer in many capacities. Bill is Vice Chairman of the Idea Campaign.


Lowell K. Strohl
August 2002 to August 2008

Lowell is a former VP with Exxon International and served at Exxon and its subsidiaries in many capacities over the years. He is married to Rebecca Strohl with whom has 2 children. He attended Earlham College, Renssellar Polytechnic Institute and Carnegie Institute of Technology. Lowell is involved in the Exxon Foundation, the United Way of Morris County, the Business Council for International Understanding, and the Global Business Management Council. He is a former Trustee with the Chautauqua Institution (2001-2003). Lowell currently serves as Chairman of the Foundation and is a member by office of the Development Council, Executive (Chair), Finance, Audit, Investment, Nominating & Governance, and Personnel committees.
